We all know foods like garlic and onion cause bad breath, but did you know that acidic foods can also cause bad breath? Below is a list of some surprising types of food that you should avoid to keep fresh breath.
1. Acidic Foods
Lemons, pickles, and oranges– what do they have in common? They all contain high amounts of citric acid. In the mouth, citric acid causes bacteria to reproduce faster than normal, this in turn increases sulfuric compound production.
2. Alcohol & Foods That Dry Your Mouth
Because saliva helps clean your mouth and manage bacteria, a dry mouth is the most common cause of bad breath. Alcohol acts as a drying agent, therefore food and drinks that contain alcohol can cause your breath to be unpleasant. Surprisingly, even mouthwashes that contain alcohol can cause bad breath.
3. High Protein Foods
When you consume protein, ammonia and ketones are produced through the metabolism process. Large amounts of ammonia and ketones cause halitosis, or bad breath. Remember to eat proteins in moderation.
Bacteria thrive in the presence of sugar. Eating foods that contain high amounts of sugar can increase the amount of bacteria in your mouth. Surprisingly, many mints contain sugar. So, be aware that some mints may be harming rather than helping your breath. When choosing breath fresheners such as mint or gum, chose those that are sugar-free. Gum and mints that contain xylitol actually helps fight plaque and bad breath.
