How Do You Know if You Need Gum Therapy?

Alexandria VA Gum Disease Treatment DentistAt Farhan Qureshi, DDS, we want our patients to know how they can monitor their own gum health at home. Noticing any of these following signs or symptoms of disease will let you know that it’s time to see the dentist:

Pink in the Sink
Gum inflammation is usually quite painless. But even in the early stages of gum disease, bleeding is a sure sign that there is something going on. When gums become inflamed, they can bleed with even a small disturbance from a toothbrush or floss. Healthy gums shouldn’t bleed!

Puffy, Rolled, Receding Gums
Healthy gums stick snugly to the tooth. Inflammation makes them roll up and out away from teeth as if they’re trying to get away from bacteria tucked underneath the gumlines.
Inflammation is caused as extra fluid in blood supply increases and flows to the area. This provides more germ-fighting agents to infected site to aid in recovery.

Persistent Bad Breath
Bad breath can result from the constant presence of smelly bacteria inside of the mouth. As gum disease advances, gingival and bone tissue around the teeth erodes, creating quite an odor!
This smell can’t just be rinsed away with mouthwash or masked with minty gum. It takes something a bit more aggressive to fully remove the odor-causing presence inside of your mouth.

Teeth on the Move!
Have you noticed any teeth loosening, shifting, or developing new gaps between them? This could happen when the tissues supporting teeth are compromised. Ultimately, teeth can fall out as a result of untreated gum disease.

If you notice any of these signs, don’t dismiss them as normal. Schedule a visit to Dr. Qureshi as soon as possible for a complete gum evaluation.
